There seems to be an issue with a local install on Mac OS X running MAMP Pro.

I’ve followed the installation instructions step-by-step as usual but visiting my site root simply displays the message:

Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.

If I manually append the name of my system directory I do manage to get through to the installation wizard but for some reason it doesn’t seem to redirect manually. This is consistent whenever I install locally.

Can you think of any reason this would be happening automatically?

Hi, Ian Y. EE2.x is different from EE1.x in that you visit the /system folder to start the install process. Give that a try.

So that’s part of the normal install process in EE2? It always felt like a bit of a hack when compared with the more automatic method of EE1.

Well if that’s the case then fair enough, just ignore me. 😊 The only thing is though that manual appending the name of your system directory to the URL isn’t mentioned once in the installation file. I only tried it when I was trying to force the issue and presumed there must be some kind of problem with the EE2 install process (especially because the first couple I did were still in either beta or early releases).

Yes, that’s how the installation process works.

Actually, it is mentioned in the docs:

Point your browser to the system folder. ExpressionEngine will automatically detect that no installation is present and the installation wizard will load. (My emphasis)

    Hi Ingmar,

That’s not the installation docs I was following. I was following the User Guide > Installation, the same guide I have always followed back in the days of EE1 and since the launch of EE2. Other than telling you to rename the system folder and update the index.php file to point to that location appending that name to the URL is never mentioned. It may be worth updated them to avoid confusion. I notice the forums contain a number of similar issues with the same response messages.

It does say “Next: Run the Installation Wizard” at the bottom, doesn’t it?

That said, thanks for your feedback, we’re always looking for ways to make our docs even clearer.
