I am using EE2 to power a Flash website by loading an EE XML file into Flash.

EE’s dynamic XML files take longer for Flash to load than flat XML files, especially on servers that run EE a little slow like Media Temple’s Grid Server.

Is there any way to have EE write a flat XML file that only gets updated when the database gets updated?

    Thanks for any tips.

There is not an existing way to do this that I’m aware of. You may be interested in caching the page to increase performance though, depending on how often your data changes.

If the data does not change very much, what would a good cache setting be?

That depends on how often you would like for the page to check for new entries. If you want it check every hour, set the refresh interval to 60. If you want it to update every day, set it to 1440, etc.

You could also set a large cache refresh interval (like 1440) and manually clear the cache after posting an entry by going to Tools->Data->Clear Caching->Page (template) cache files.
