CP theme not changing

    Greetings,

I’m developing a new site on a MAMP server (2.1.3, build 20101220). I just downloaded the additional CP Themes—didn’t know they existed before.

First thing is that the Mobile theme doesn’t show up in the CP as a choice, even though I see its folder in the CP_themes folder.

Second issue is that I tried switching from default to Corporate to Fruit to see what I would prefer—that all worked fine, finally deciding on Corporate. Just now, I’m trying to switch back to Fruit. As it turns out, Fruit is what was listed in the CP (not corporate), and try as I might, I can’t get the CP theme to change away from Corporate—not to default, not to Fruit, and not to the non-existent Mobile.

    Any ideas?

Hi, strudel. Since you’re developing locally, you aren’t on a mobile device. I suspect that’s why you aren’t seeing that particular theme available.

I switched back and forth about 5 times without any sort of problem.. are you running any sort of third party add-ons?

I was thinking it might be something like that, but I didn’t realize there was a browser/device detection built into the theme.

No, not a single extension or add-on because I’ve just started this site. When I remove the Corporate and Fruit themes from the folder and log back in, I see the default theme. But then if I put them back in and log-in, I automatically get the Corporate theme.

I tried renaming the default theme to see what would happen and then I get the following:

    An Error Was Encountered
Unable to load the requested file: _shared/menu/item_parent.php

And even when I set it to the default theme, it actually defaults to the Corporate theme. And I’ve tried this on 3 different browsers now (FF, Safari and Opera). Same thing, it defaults to Corporate.

Obviously not a fatal problem, but I’d love to get it to work correctly.

    Thanks!

    strudel,

You can change the theme in 2 places. For the default theme you change it in General Configuration and for your personalized choice look under your account menu.

Make sure both those places match default

There you go! That answered the question!

But I don’t really get the difference between the General and the My Account settings? Where should I make the setting as I create the site for other users (I’m the super admin designing the site)?

Does the My Account setting override the General Config setting? How do I set things so they are the same for all users?

    Thanks!

    strudel,

The theme set in the General Configuration is what all new users will see.
Your account setting does not override anybody else’s.

    Does that help?

Sort of…. So if I want to try out different CP themes I should do that in My Account? Because when I was trying things out originally in General Config it worked, but then it after a bit it always defaulted to Corporate.

Generally I won’t be trying these CP themes out a bunch; it was more that I didn’t realize there were other ones…. but I’m just curious how to work with them.

So you’re saying that what is set in the General Config is what new users will see?

    strudel,

Yes this will always override the one set in Default Config for you as an individual user. So yes perfect for testing out new themes as it won’t affect other users on your system

So you’re saying that what is set in the General Config is what new users will see?

    Correct

One follow-up question: how is the setting made initially in the My Account area? I ask because I didn’t make a setting there, yet it decided to take a certain theme. Is it supposed to remain empty until I make a choice?

Do you mean it’s not been using the Default theme before?

I had changed the theme in the General Configuration area a few times, finally leaving it at Corporate. Then, I couldn’t change it back to Default or Fruit through the General Config area (no matter what, it would stay at Corporate) until I went in to the My Account setting. I’m not sure if I’m answering your question….

    Hi, strudel.

When you install initially, the default value of the database field cp_theme is set to blank.

If you go into the General tab, and change the default value for all to Corporate, you’re changed to Corporate. But if you go to your *individual* CP setting and change back to Default, it sticks and writes out the value of cp_theme to the database.

Other members will have a blank cp_theme value, and if the value is blank, EE looks to the General setting. Does that make sense?
