Changing field groups for an existing weblog

I don’t have any idea how this happened, but the field group has changed on a client’s weblog, and I’m wondering what EE will do when I change it back to the correct one. There are several weblogs on the site; this one is for a “blog” and uses the Default Field Group. Another weblog (“alerts”) has only one custom field, and this is the one that the weblog “blog” is now set to. When you pull up the Publish or Edit screens under weblog “blog” the only field is the one for “alerts.” The existing blog entries display properly on the web site (showing the fields from the Default Field Group), but I’m afraid of what might happen if I change the field group back to Default.

I’d like to know too for future reference if changing the field group changes the data in the database for existing entries.

    Hi vmills,

The first thing to do is to take a complete backup of your database before you do anything else. You should be able to move the field group without issue but if you have posted any new entries into the blog group or the alerts group since this issue occured then those entries might not work properly and may need to be deleted and then recreated. You should try and identify how this happened; do you clients have access to the weblog administration areas or perhaps has an addon caused this?

    Cheers

Thanks Greg. I did make a full backup before the change. The site has been dormant for several months and a new content manager has just taken over. It seems far-fetched that they found and changed the Groups Preferences for a particular weblog, but that’s all I can think of as a reason for the change. No add-ons have been installed recently.

With clients you never know. 😊 Did you find out if they made any new entries recently?
