We have developed an intranet site for a company which is being hosted on their company Windows 2003 Standard server.

We are unable to insert photos into articles. What we did:

    1. Put insertion point where we want the image
    2. Click the image icon
    3. Click the Upload tab
    4. Browse to the desired image
    5. Click “Send it to the Server”

    The error is returned:

It was not possible to complete the request due to file system permission restrictions.

Could you please help with resolving this issue? Otherwise the client is very happy with the EE experience.

    Thank you.

The clue may be in the error message- check to make sure the folder where you’re uploading the images to is writable.

We understand the folder is writable. The company’s server admin says

I have checked in both the IIS settings and also the local folder’s security settings and from what I can tell I’ve enabled every account there to be able to write to that directory (which probably isn’t ideal).

Can [EE] say which account should have the permission to write to that directory or what spots in IIS I can check?

    Does this help?

    Thank you.

Could be permissions as you suggest - You can check if the authors member group has permission to upload in your file upload prefs Admin>Content admin>File upload prefs then edit the appropriate upload location

Even the Super Admins cannot upload files, and they always can, correct? It says so in the preference pane you suggest.

    Thank you.

As far as EE is concerned, yes. You’ll still need correct permissions for Windows, though. In practical terms that means the the user that your server is running under needs to be able to write there. The popup message you’re seeing is returned by Windows, not EE.

    Thanks, Ingmar.

The IT person who manages our client’s server believes he has already done this. So we are a little perplexed. He has asked us to ask you

what spots in IIS I can check

We are in unfamiliar territory here [Windows server] and look to you for direction.  😊

Is there a _thumbs folder beneath where your image uploads are at? I suspect the right permissions are not set there. Can you have your IT person confirm that?

    Problem is two-thirds resolved.

We are using Wygwam, and we discovered that you need a different server path for uploads than expected. We needed to drop the drive letter and colon, in our case c: and use forward slashes instead of backslashes.

    We needed to use: /our_server/wwwroot/file_uploads/

    Instead of this: c:\our_server\wwwroot\file_uploads\

So we are now able to place files in the Create and Edit windows.

Unfortunately, the File Manager is still not functioning correctly.

    If we do the following:

    1. Got to Content > File Manager
    2. Click on File Upload
    3. Click Browse
    4. Select a file

The Uploading File message appears with the spinning progress icon, but the spinning icon doesn’t stop (see attached for reference).

Then, if we click the Upload button directly above it, we get the error at the top of the page:

    upload_no_file_selected

But the file actually does upload.

Do you have any suggestions to fix this issue? We don’t want our client to have to deal with the quirkiness.

Thanks in advance for your help. 😊

    Hi VGC,

Which version and build of EE are you using on this server? Can you please make sure that you have upgraded to the latest version.

    Cheers

    Greg

We are not that far behind. We are currently running…

    v2.1.0
    Build: 20100810

We will get the upgrade and let you know However, this was not a problem when developing the site on a Unix server;. it began when we moved the site to the Windows sever

    Thank you.

    VGC,

It is highly recommended to do the upgrade. Once finished double check your permissions again to make sure they are still intact. Also be sure to follow the version update docs and not the build update docs.
