How long before the system automatically logs you off? Is this the same in EE1 and EE2? Can this preference be changed?

User sessions expire in two hours, admins sessions in one hour. There is no supported way of modifying that value, you’d have to edit ...system/expressionengine/libraries/Session.php directly.

By admin sessions, you mean anyone with the ability to login to the Control Panel?

I mean Control Panel sessions in general, yes.
