Hi all. I’m new here and relatively new to web design and am now looking to take my skills onto a new level.

As a budding new web designer, I’m now considering which software is best. My assumption was that I’d have to go with Adobe. However, after reading a few comments on here, there are some who consider it to be too expensive given that there are other options out there which could also be better.

I was hoping for advice from experienced people who could let me know if you think Adobe is the way to go or recommend any other software.

Thank you and grateful in advance

If you want to get into web designing then you should go with Adobe Photoshop!

All most all web templates are designed with Adobe Photoshop.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended for my designs. But I have Adobe CS5 Master Collection,
    which has everything in it.

Adobe fireworks is a good choice, generates and centers the webpage for you without getting down dirty with all the fancy layering but the problem comes in when you want an image and text and maybe a form;thats when you will be required to slice.

Saving the sliced doc in .psd and then opening it in photoshop is known to work;but you will need to center and the forms will not be exported.

There is the Gimp. Free, open source and usually capable of doing what Photoshop does. Its documentation is more difficult and it’s definitely a programmer’s tool, that is, it lacks the hand-holding PhotoShop does for you. I’ve used both and I’ve heard differing parties swear on one or the other. Really depends on your budget.

I disagree. My previous posting was about a viable alternative to Photoshop.

As a matter of fact I’ve been using it on my current project. Warning: As I said in my previous posting it was developed by programmers for programmers and not the general public. You don’t get the hand-holding Adobe gives you, but you have a lot more power once you learn the ropes.

For Image processing, there is GIMP (http://www.gimp.org). Besides running on Linux, GIMP also run on windows and mac os. It’s good for creating Image manipulation including for web design, i am sure GIMP can compete with photoshop for manipulating image for web. Other free open source is Blender, for 3D content creation. And for tools like illustrator and corel draw, you can choose inkscape as an open source scalable vector graphics editor.
I myself coding in Linux Mandriva environment and already use GIMP as my graphic tools but not use yet blender and inkscape.

For manual, besides documentation provided by the website itself (http://www.gimp.org), we can use other manuals in other website, eg:http://gimp-tutorials.net/. For one of my creation in web by GIMP, you can check on my web : http://www.sofwan.net 😊.

I’ve heard that Adobe was a nice software. Want to know more with this software.

It’s VERY nice software. Very user friendly. Just not cheap. If you can afford DO get Adobe, but I’d still go and get the GIMP. (It’s free). Together they are dynamite.
