I have my default html buttons setup to produce textile rather than html, so far so good.
The only thing is there’s a red + sign next to my buttons that is confusing the hell out of the end-users.
It’s not listed when I edit the default formatting buttons, so how do I remove it?
See included screenshot to see what I mean.

Hi, e-man. That Plus symbol is to allow them to add other buttons. I don’t know where in the code it resides, but a Feature Request to remove it for certain member groups would be one way of changing it.
