    This question may be related to a resolved thread.

    Hi,

    How do I go about getting a new site to display using MSM? I have installed and configured the MSM. Now I cannot get my new site to appear at all.

    I am using EE 2.1.3 Build 20101220 and latest MSM.

    From what I understand the only file I need to FTP to my new site is a copy of the index.php from the main install, is this correct?

    If so which parts of this file do I need to edit? Can you give me an example with paths please?

    Thanks.

    GlobalGraphics,

    If so which parts of this file do I need to edit?

    You can find that info here in the MSM documentation under step 2

    Does that help?

    Are both your sites are on the same hosting account? As in you can see both sites folders beside each other?

    I have followed the instructions on this page, I just need to clarify what do I need to FTP to my new site?

    Both sites are on the same hosting, i.e. paths are:
    /var/sites/m/myfirstsite.com/public_html/
    /var/sites/m/mysecondsite.com/public_html/

    currently on /var/sites/m/myfirstsite.com/public_html/
    I have my ExpressionEngine installation

    and on /var/sites/m/mysecondsite.com/public_html/
    I have just uploaded index.php

    Is this correct?

    Hi GlobalGraphics,

    That looks like the right place to upload the duplicate index.php
    In that duplicate you will need to change these values (about line 80).
    “Site Name” is the short name of the new site.
    “CP URL” is the URL to your control panel (this will be at your myfirstsite.com)
    “Site URL” is the URL you want the second site to be found at.

    $assign_to_config['site_name'] = '';
    $assign_to_config['cp_url'] = '';
    $assign_to_config['site_url'] = '';

    I also found that for MSM to work correctly (on Media Temple in my case) I needed to set open_basedir to off for both the primary site and any secondary sites in the server configuration.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for that, that is all I needed to know.

    It might be worth pointing out I had to change line 26 to:

    $system_path = '/var/sites/m/myfirstsite.com/public_html/system';

    It seems to be working now although mysecondsite.com now displays on old out dated version of myfirstsite.com. Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution to this? I am guessing it has something to do with the system using the templates from the database rather than the html files?

    —Edit——————————
    On a second look it would seem my site isn’t functioning correctly. Will check and repost shortly.

    I am starting again with the Multisite Manager. I have had problems with my system not completely copying all files/folders.

    I will have to repost once I am back up and running.
    Thanks for your help.

    I am now trying to upgrade to the latest version of EE and have followed these instructions: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/installation/update_build.html

    I have now got a blank screen when accessing my CP. I am guessing I should have followed these instructions instead?

    Not having any luck at the moment!

    :(

    GlobalGraphics,

    What was there reason for trying to update? You mentioned you were using EE2.1.3 already!

    It seems to be working now although mysecondsite.com now displays on old out dated version of myfirstsite.com.

    Are you saving templates as files? You may need to update the template basepath in your second site

    I have had problems with my system not completely copying all files/folders.

    Is this via FTP?

    I was originally on EE 2x I then tried to install the MSM but was getting the ‘blank screen’ when trying to ‘edit sites’.

    I then posted on here for help and was told to upgrade to 2.1.3. I rolled back my installation to before I tried the MSM and then upgraded to 2.1.3

    I then tried installing the MSM and got past the previous ‘blank screen’ stage but then encountered the problem I have now.

    I therefore have gone back to my last backup which was 2x and am trying to upgrade to 2.1.3 again. However my local files are stored on a drive which we have been having trouble with so I have some folders half copied and some not at all! I will attempt another upgrade today.

    Are you saving templates as files? You may need to update the template basepath in your second site

    Yes I am and can you tell me where I would update template basepath?

    Is this via FTP?

    No it was a problem with my local drive as mentioned above.

    Hi There,

    I was just wondering whether it would be possible to speak to someone? Do you have a telephone support? I am not doing very well with my site at the moment and feel I could benefit from speaking to someone.

    Thanks.

    Hi, GlobalGraphics. Unfortunately we don’t provide phone support. We basically work with a queue system where three of us work throughout the day. Right now you get me. 😊

    Configuring MSM can be problematic, depending on your system setup. Where are you at with things?

    As far as figuring out where your paths are, I wrote:

    See if that helps with finding out what your paths are.

    Hi Sue,

    Thanks for your help.

    I will be trying to get a refund for EE and the MSM as I am unable to do what I require by myself. The ExpressionEngine software is great, it is the multisite manager that is my problem. May I suggest that the documentation on this is simplified to the point of spoon-feeding for the inexperienced developers out there like me!

    Thanks,
    Gareth.

    I’m sorry you’re frustrated by this. A successful install of MSM is doable, I’ve done it a number of times.

    We can if needed log into your site and see what the problem might be. But before we do that, can you tell us who you’re hosting with? It may make a big difference.

    Hi Sue,

    We are hosted with: http://www.tsohost.co.uk/ I have checked with them regarding: open_basedir and they have uploaded a php.ini file to “turn it off”.

    My problem wasn’t with the hosting it was that when I installed the MSM and upgraded EE my htaccess generator stopped working and I was getting blank pages in the CP. I tried turning debug =‘1’; on but it wasn’t working.

    I am just a little too inexperienced to be working on this project in the time I have been allowed. It is really frustrating but is a decision which is out of my control. I have contacted the sales team for a refund on the EE license and the MSM licenses.

    Thanks.

    I’m sorry you were so frustrated. Best wishes on your upcoming projects, should you choose to use EE elsewhere. I’d recommend going with EngineHosting—a lot easier to set up. Don’t hesitate to post again as needed.
