We are considering using EE for our next project due to our difficulties with Business Catalyst, but have a few questions…

    1. Is it possible to allow users to register for the site and separate them into different groups? (i.e grouped by alumni years)

    2. From there, would we be able to send mass/group emails to specific alumni groups?

    3. Do users have access to an FTP/file upload interface to upload images and misc files?

Any feedback would be great. If any of this requires an addon/plugin, a link to said addon would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Hi Rich, and welcome to the forums!

    1. Yes, you could manually assign them to a particular member group after they register, OR implement the alumni year as a custom member field that they could choose themselves during registration.

    2. The built-in Communicate tool will let you send to specific member groups, but it doesn’t currently filter by custom member fields. However, if you want to use a 3rd party mailing service like MailChimp so that you can track the messages then there are several ways to sync to that service, which should give you more control over who to send to.

    3. Yes, for this you’d probably want to use the SafeCracker add-on if you have many users uploading. The add-on provides more features than the built-in Stand-Alone Entry form.

Thanks for your interest and don’t hesitate with further questions!
