Advice needed: Gallery performance under heavy server load.

I am looking for some advice regarding the gallery and its performance.

We’ve had a lot of little galleries on our sites for years with no issues. Now we’ve started one that has become, for the moment, very popular. Mostly from Gallery visits the server uptime command is showing load averages of over 40 and the server isn’t handling this very well.

So, what I am wondering is:

    1) Is the Gallery less efficient than the weblog module?

    2) What settings should I use to make this work as well as possible?

    3) Do Gallery comments count as something that clears all caches if that setting is selected?

Efficiency should be about the same. The gallery is somewhat more limited but the internal data structure (and thus the required queries) are comparable. This means that the general optimization tips apply to the Gallery module as well. Yes, caches will be flushed if there is a new comment posted.

I am having a problem with overload or something similar in my forums.

One thing to do to “save weight” is to turn off anything which is not needed - for instance, I removed the “visitor stats” from my forum main page. If your gallery has anything similar which requires extra mysql calls…and it is not really needed, you can try to turn it off.

Thanks, will go over the optimization tips again, though at a glance I’ve implemented most that are doable for the site. May need to turn off having caches get flushed when new content is posted while people are being most comment-happy.

Are you going to be using EE2.x any time soon? If so, you might want to consider switching to using a weblog in anticipation of the move. Also you can moderate comments, which might help a bit. Thanks for the assist, Craig!

I would desperately love to move to EE 2.x (the commenting moderation would be so useful in my current situation), but I already had a ton of gallery images in place by the time it became clear the Gallery wouldn’t be in 2.x. Otherwise I would have moved to 2.x almost as soon as it came out, but I am trapped at the moment, unfortunately.

I don’t suppose there’s any estimation yet of when the import tool might be ready?

I am afraid there is not, no. Please let us know if there’s anything else.
