Categories not saving

I’ve got an installation of EE 1.7.0 build number 20101018.  I just moved the site from a Media Temple Grid Server to a Media Temple (dv). Most everything seems to be working correctly, but when I publish a new entry and choose a category, the category does not save. I go back into the entry, and no category is selected.

These are categories I set up manually, and there are only 6 of them.

I can browse to the entry and see it, and the rest of the data is saving correctly, just not the category.

    Extensions that are enabled are:

    - jQuery for the Control Panel (v.1.1.1)
    - Foxee Extension (v.1.10.60.035)

    Hi headlamp,

Did you move the site yourself using PHPMyAdmin (or a similar tool) to populate a new database or did the MT staff do this for you? Are you using an .htaccess file for this site? If so, what does it do? Can you please check whether the exp_category_posts DB table is being populated? You can do this by going to Admin > Utilities > SQL Manager > Manage Database Tables and then click browse on the exp_category_posts row. Do you see your new entry IDs and category IDs in that table?

    Cheers

    Greg

I moved the database/site myself using PHPMyAdmin. I backed up the old database/server files, setup a new installation of EE on the new server, move my files over, and imported the old database into the new one. I’ve never done this before, but I followed the documentation steps.

I checked out the exp_category_posts and the category IDs are there, but my new entry IDs are not. The categories were set up before I moved the server, so that makes sense. The entry ID’s that I created for testing after I moved the server are not listed in the exp_category_posts section of the database.

I just checked the exp_weblog_titles section and sorted by entry_ID and my new entries ARE both in there.

I am using an .htaccess file, but ONLY to remove the index.php from the URLs. I’ve already removed it for testing purposes.

When you create a new “test” category, does that work? If it doesn’t, could you try to create a whole new category group?

OK. I tried adding a new test category to the existing 6 categories, and then selecting it from the new entry. It didn’t save the category still.  Then I tried adding a new test category group, adding a couple test categories to it, and then assigning that category group to the weblog that i’m working with. When I went to publish an item to that weblog, it says that no category group has been assigned to it. When I look at the weblog management and the group assignments, it still says “None” even though I assigned it a category.

It appears that anything to do with categories is not working at all.

Can you please try to disable all extensions globally? You might also want to upload a fresh set of EE files just to rule out file corruption.

It actually is a fresh set up EE files already. I setup a clean install of EE, and then imported my old database into the new database running the new installation. I will disable the extensions and see what that does.

I have tried disabling the two extensions i’m using:

    - jQuery for the Control Panel (v.1.1.1)
    - Foxee Extension (v.1.10.60.035)

Categories are still not saving. I choose a category, update the entry, and when I open the entry back up, the category is unselected.

This is kind of drastic, but what happens if you delete the category group and make a new one? Does it work then?

I’d prefer not to do that if possible. I have over 100 entries that would have to have categories reassigned if I remove that group. Plus, i’ve already tried setting up a brand new category group, adding test categories, assigning it to this weblog, and it’s still not working.

It seems like anything to do with categories is not being saved to the database. The old category info from before the server transfer is working, but any new category assignments, category groups, etc.. don’t save to the database.

Initially the categories were created via the CP, correct? No direct db manipulation? Is there the same number of entries for exp_category_field_data and exp_categories?

Yes, categories were created from the CP. I checked those two database records and the entries are the same in both.

So a new development here. I decided to reinstall the site back on the old server to see if that works. The old server was a Media Temple GS and the new server is a Media Temple DV.  The old server was still running since I was having issues with the new server. I deleted the old files on the server, and replaced them with the backed up versions from EE 1.6.8.  I also deleted the database and set it up again, and imported the old backed up database. The site is up and running again on the old server, and the categories are saving over there just fine.

I think as a next step i’ll clear off the files from the new server and try transferring everything over again as version 1.6.8. If that works I can try upgrading to 1.7 on the new server and see if it still works. I’ll let you know the result of all that.

    Thanks.
