Wondering, has anyone ever had the problem where the homepage/index.php (and only the homepage) will not return and just forever loads until you clear the template cache in utilities.

Yes. I ended up paring down the home page to the minimum I needed to show the page. As few weblog tags as I could get; no embeds, either. I also turned *off* the caching on the template.
You can make the page faster by gzipping all the components and doing the other performance tricks, like far future expires, reducing HTTP requests, etc., that Google and Yahoo! recommend.
The client insists on a mammoth flash animation, so this particular home page is still not very fast…. :/

What version and build of EE are you using?
Are you using any addons?
