Note: There is a similar fault and solution mentioned here http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/troubleshooting/general/unstyled_cp.html  - I’ve tried this, and it didn’t work at all :(

Essentially, my site, hosted with Dreamhost was recently moved to a new server, Dreamhost don’t provide support for EE and the CP styling has failed. This not only makes the CP awkward to use, but would NOT be a particularly good example to make to any potential client too!

    How can I fix this?

After the trouble I had setting-up EE to work on Dreamhost’s servers in the first place, I’m embarrassed that this has now occurred. I need the site to work, so if this matter can’t be resolved then I’ll have to abandon EE for something more reliable (and will advise anyone else to choose alternatives too).

    Regards,
    Matt

Has your theme folder path changed, too (Admin > General Configuration)? The theme folder path isn’t your URL, it’s the path on the server.

I wouldn’t attribute an unstyled CP to EE: Dreamhost is very much a bare-bones host.

Thanks for your help Michael! Good question, I currently have the following:

‘URL to your “themes” folder’ > pointing at: /themes/

    and

‘Theme Folder Path’ > pointing at: /themes/

It’s only my CP themes that aren’t working though, if I change these paths, won’t it mess up the other themes?

Yeah, I largely agree with that, but their service generally is first-rate and they’re the best hosts I’ve ever used. If it’s a case of switching host or switching CMS (at this stage), the CMS would lose!

I’ve actually had this happen to me as well! When they change servers, something on the system path gets changed, You can use php to find the path to the theme directory.

Make a new PHP file and call it something like serverpath.php
Right at the top, with no spaces before it, add this PHP Code:

    <?php echo $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; ?>

Upload the file to your control panel themes folder. Check the path.

Update the path to match the file in the Admin > General Configuration.

Thanks Leslie, I’m trying this now and will update again shortly.

Done and sorted!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH LESLIE!! I’d hug you if I could! This problem has annoyed me all week! ...(and thank you Michael for your helpfulness too).

    For future reference:

In CP Home >  Admin >  System Preferences >  General Configuration >  Theme Folder Path

    I had:  /home/.peseus/something/url.com/themes/

    It needed to be:  /home/something/url.com/themes/

Resolved + still using EE too 😊

Glad I could help! Sometimes those server moves are a drag. :D

Ah, yes, my next step was to have you SSH into your server, navigate to your theme folder and use ‘pwd’ to get the path. Leslie’s method was probably easier. :D

I probably could have just told you what to use, too: I have the exact same path: /home/something/url.com/themes/ (where something is your DH username).

Yeah…good point Leslie.  In fact, I’d say to anyone else who might read this: Server moves break stuff in other CMS too (not just ExpressionEngine!) :s

    Cheers for the help.

I appreciate the help Michael, between you and Leslie (okay, mostly Leslie, but you would have got the same result a different way!) you managed to resolve a problem that has been annoying the crap out of me for most of a week now!

    Thanks,
    Matt
