    Renegades,

There are a few places to update permissions there so just checking you caught them all.

Remember Default permissions are only ones that are applied to all new forums you create. They will not update existing forums.

See attached for changing permissions for both forums and categories.

    Was there one left uncaught?

    Hi John

Thanks again ... well - I am running out of ideas. Attached are some screen-shot from places I found which I can believe would make a difference ...but see for yourself. Based on the settings I should be able to post, should;t I?

The only thing that puts a “?” on it it ...
Membership Preferences General Configuration shows a security lock as “Locked” … and I can find no hint to unlock security lock. I Googled this and searched this forum but could not find an answer that would fit me.

I went back and forth, several times, through the entire CP but I have no idea where i could have possibly missed something?

    Thanks a lot

OK, here is one more I wonder ...
    In -
    Membership Preferences General Configuration

    All I cana do is:
      1.  Member Group Name
      2.  Member Group Description
      3.  Include Members in PUBLISH page multi-author list?
      4.  Include Members in Site’s Member List?

Under the Forum itself, I only find “global/default settings/permissions, nothing referring to member-settings applying to forums only but then again - if I look up members I can only email them, look up their profile or delete them ... I can’t change any member preference concerning an individual member ?!?. I could only set up a new group and assign then the new group to that member, correct ?

    thanks again

Have you checked the Forum and Category permissions as John Henry suggested? The Member related permissions appear to be fine, but you also need the appropriate permissions for every forum. Can you post screenshots of those as well? Take a look a the screen shot he posted and follow the links the arrows point to.

Sorry ... I am getting more and more lost now ...

Ok, below is a screenshot (management.png) of exactly what John showed in his screen shot and I cannot find ANY button where to set permission for the “Management” forum (Is there anything like this, and if, where? I looked all over but maybe I have tomatoes on my eyes)  :red:

Apart from that, as you can see in my screenshot below (management.png) the only option to set permission on is on the category forum and the actual forum ... and if I click any of these “Permissions” setting links, all I am presented with are the windows which I had attached in my last post (see 6ways2.gif).

I am sorry if I am so stupid but I just can’t find the “Forum Management” Permissions settings ... could you please point me towards it?

    Thanks

    Added:
I have again attached the two screenshots taken from - when choosing the two “Permissions” links (in management.png)
1—-  click on the white link (category) please see attachment “category.png
2—-  click on the red link (forum) please see attachment “forum.png

Besides all that, as the forum.png shows, there is no option to set Super Admin Permissions!

CONFUSING THOUGH STILL ... also in my earlier screenshot, you also can see a DEFAULT permission setting (you can do that if you click on Forum Board Home and then on the sub navigation where it says Default Permissions) Why then, if that is set, would I still need to manually set the permissions for each forum?

What is it that am I missing in here?  Must be something my brain can’t take, sorry!

I need to still add one more ...

I also even went into Admin > Security and Session Preferences and made sure that “Require IP” is set to “NO” (can’t remember where I read it, read so much, but I got to know that this could cause exactly the error I keep getting) and NO, my firewall or cookies disallow would neither be the cause for the error, I checked all those potentials ...

    See screenshot again

I am getting serious headache here ...  Thanks for your patience

5 AM here again (need to be at office at 8)

... three days in a row hardly any sleep. I guess I may just uninstall everything again tomorrow night and start all over again (it got better each time I reinstalled it) maybe the forth time it will be OK

Good morning and good night, wherever you may be ...  😊

Thanks a lot for your replies and help trying to sort this out

    Renegades,

How many sites do you have on MSM?
    What re there URLs?
Which one is the primary one, the one EE was installed on?
What is the URL to your forum?

Are you shown as logged in in your forum?

    Hi John Henry

I have two sites in MSM, the forum is installed on the primary site (basically both sites are still only a skeleton), this is the path to the forum:

It doesn’t matter whether or not I am logged in to the backend and try to view the forum from there or if I just log into the forum at the forum site (as Super Admin), both times, as well as a “member” I get the error that I have no authority to perform this action

the attachment shows the steps I took/take to get the error.

Just got home from office a little earlier today. I will now uninstall everything, (4th time, but this time I will even destroy the database) and give it another shot with a totally clean install.

You may as well close this thread, it’s getting too long, I guess. Let’s just see what happens with another new install and take it from there.  :ohh:

    Thanks

    Ah, this is too much!

    I wiped out everything,
started with a clean install(that includes an absolute new DB as well, everything new!)
this time - for simplicity and the sake of easy start, I chose to add the theme “Agile”
    everything went like a breeze
went to the front-end and tried to add comment ...
got the error message “you are not authorized to perform this action”

    I give up -

There is hardly anything I could have done wrong since I haven’t even touched anything at all! I am the Super Admin, should have all privileges but obviously something is not right within the engine.

My firewall is even turned off, (while testing) Java is all enabled, cookies are allowed! What’s going on? Am I so stupid? This is my - gosh I stopped counting - ..th software setup on my local machine and the only one I can’t do anything because - not even as the “Super Admin” I have any rights to do anything on the front-end! This is truly frustrating (after a forth install)

    Cheers

Giving up on EE ... sorry - but this doesn’t work.

Since 6 days I’m trying to get this thing going locally. Now I tried it online and I can’t even get an installation going ... (apparently some misconfiguration of the config file) can’t remember having touched it, except changing the permission ... well, the documentation asked me to, so don’t blame me!

BTW - I use FileZilla (since the last three years, so I guess I know how to handle a file upload, etc. (especially after reading the documentation back and forth a ten times and dozens of posts). I know I am not the smartest guy but I am not that dumb neither.

YES BELIEVE ME ... after 6 days nothing but installing - uninstalling - installing - uninstalling -installing ... I read so much others may perhaps read in 5 months and sure I followed every single step into every single detail! My word!

Just getting it to work may take the entire 4 weeks that I have money back guarantee on it, then I haven’t even had a chance yet to touch the guts of it, not to mention testing parts of ... boy this is less enjoyable than looking at the opera house from my balcony (1.5 km far away and imagining the performance)

My apology if I sound a bit stressed, but that is how I feel after a week - almost day and night reading and trying to get something going what I had gotten going a hundred times with other systems before EE. I tested about a dozen or so CMS and must have tested how many ECommerce and other software but EE is by so far the most complicated and frustrating I had ever used. Sorry, but that’s the truth (and that is a commercial software, folks)

Go sleep now. 2 AM again. Don;t know what I am doing with EE tomorrow. Maybe I just hand it back. Don’t worry abut the money, it doesn’t bother me. The headache I have with EE does!

Just have a look how long this post is now .. for one single - silly error? Don;t want to imagine what happens if I should ever get this going ... (after how many weeks) how long does then the site build take ...how many years?

    Hi, Renegades,

I am sorry that EE and MSM did not work out for you.  Since we are now following this up in sales, I am going to close this post.

Best of luck to you on your project.

    Thank you.

    Re-opening.

Renegades, I can see from this thread alone that your IP changes fairly frequently.  At this point, everything is working for you *except* that you get the not authorized error when trying to submit a comment or forum post on your own install?

On top of keeping “Require IP” turned off, can you please, on that same page, turn off the use of Secure Forms, and see if that helps?

And please do not reinstall, that will not fix this and just sets back the troubleshooting process.

    Thank you.
