    Hi,

first I want to say that EE 2 is really a great tool to build a website on. The CP offers great flexibility, custom-layouts are a big step forward.

Now I’m trying to set up a more complex website with around 600 categories and about 100 custom fields (including some Matrix and Wygwam ones).
I’ve tested the CP in IE7 and IE8 and I experienced some severe performance and display problems. When switching tabs, from clicking on the tab till the content gets displayed it takes the CP almost 10 seconds in IE.

Furthermore, when a non-admin user (user group_id > 6) tries to create an entry, the CP entry page has display errors in IE8 (I’ve attached a screenshot - fresh install ee 2.1.1. build 20101020 with a few fields - no custom layout for the user - viewed with IE8 on win7). I think that’s a bug.

    Anybody else experiencing similar problems?

    timoteus,

Are all these categories part of the the same category group? And similarly are the custom fields all art of the same custom field group?

Have you tried EE in a non IE browser like FireFox or similar?

    Hi John,

The categories are spread into 6 Category groups (all groups are attached to one channel), the fields are all in the same field group. It’s not the server time that is the problem, the page renders in 0,5 secs on our server. I think the huge amount of javascript used in CP that is problematic and brings down IE.

In FireFox or Safari the tabbing in the CP is sufficiently fast.

Our problem is, that the content for the site we plan to implement is provided by about 200 different users from all around the country - some of them use IE - we have to consider that fact.

I know, that there is not going to be a simple solution for the speed issue - this would probably mean to redesign the CP. My hope on this issue is using the SAEF if it provides sufficient functionality - hopefully soon 😉

But for the bug in IE8 with the wrong positioning of the fields I hope for a solution. I haven’t written a bug-report jet, but the error can be reproduced, so actually it’s a bug.
I’ve uploaded a screenshot - the warning which ie8 shows up when loading the publish-page. (ie7 does not show the warning, and the fields are correctly positened)

    Thanks, tim

    Hi again,

something that would sure be very useful would be the possibility to restrict the visibility of category-groups just like you restrict the possibility to edit/delete.

Or maybe there is a way to restrict the display of certain category_groups for different user-groups and I’ve just overlooked it?

    Hi timoteus,

I see you’ve filed a bug report here and that it is confirmed. Performance-wise there’s only so much we can do since the control panel does rely on Javascript, and as you’ve seen other browsers have no problem.

That’s a good feature request with regards to category visibility, please don’t hesitate to submit it. Thanks!

    Hey guys,

I think I have a TEMPORARY fix for the SLOW TABS issue (this is tested in EE 2.1.3 only) in IE7 and 8.  There is one downside though.  By doing this fix, you will no longer be able to re-order the custom fields in the Publish Layout.  You can still re-order tabs, show/hide tabs and fields, etc.

SO… my suggestion is to set everything up first, then do this fix for the live site only.  This is of course assuming that you don’t give clients the ability to create their own Publish Layouts!!

    To the fix:

    1. Open /themes/javascript/compressed/cp/publish.js
    2. On line 20 (about character 32), find :

    $(”.main_tab”).sortable

    and change it to :

    $(”.xmain_tab”).sortable

(just add in the ‘x’ in front).

    3. Save and test!

That’s it.  The jquery .sortable function is causing the issue.

    Hope that this helps someone!

    Cheers.

This worked for us in 2.1.3, there clearly needs to be a fix applied to the sortable plugin.  Thanks for this temporary solution!

I am having the issue too. the quick fix does help a bit, but overall support for ie browsers is not all it should be. A lot of corrate clients are still running IE7

    ome_jelle,

This is marked as Fixed in Beta. Is anyone experiencing this on 2.1.4 beta still?

  • #12 / Jul 22, 2011 7:54am

I still have this issue after updating to 2.2.1.

    Hi, Kliniek Valkenhorst.

Which version of IE are you experiencing this with?

  • #14 / Jul 26, 2011 6:22am

    I am using 2.2.1.
I use a lot of custom fields. The sortable fix helps somewhat, but it all remains pretty slow nonetheless

Hi, Kliniek. Which version of Internet Explorer are you using? If you try another browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera, do you have the same slowdown?
