The story indicated by the following URL has been deleted, so it should result in a 404 error, but the resulting page corresponds to no template on my site.

Instead, it’s a mish-mash of three different individual stories on the site.  Any thoughts on how this could happen?

Yep, you need to set up a condition on the weblog entries tag,  see - http://coastsider.com/index.php/site/news/ does this too. 

You need something like:

{if no_results}
        {redirect="site/404"}
{/if}

Barry, you’ll want to use require_entry=“yes” for that behavior.
