OK, notwithstanding my idiot post just prior to this one on the problems of updating to 1.7.0, which I have now succeeded in doing, we are having a major problem with one of the websites we developed a while back. It apparently has caused a consistent problem loading the server, so much so that twice this week they have disabled EE (the main script) this week. Obviously this won’t do and it has to be solved.

    Here’s some background:

The site has always loaded weird. The pages load fully and look fine, but the progress bar in the browser shows the loading continuing even after. We never figured out what that was about, and no site we’ve ever developed before or since seems to have this problem. So I have a suspicion it is either the code we used in the templates, causing extra unnecessary loops, or maybe an addon, though the latter is unlikely given we didn’t use anything *that* unusual.

    Extensions are as follows:
jQuery for the Control Panel (v.1.1.1)
    Gypsy (v.1.0.6)
    LG Addon Updater (v.1.0.2)
    LG TinyMCE (v.1.3.3)
    File, by Mark Huot (v.3.1.1)

    EE is at 1.7.0

    —-
I don’t even know where to start to investigate this page loading problem or the server load (the guy at the hosting co said at times it was 70% of the server’s load???). Ideas are very welcome, or even if there was an EE support person willing to tool around and look at some of the code…

I need to solve this quickly. Before they shut down the site again. :(

Take a look at these tips to get you started. is your site slow as well, or just the host complaining about load?

The site seems to load OK (but not stellar) in that, it’ll load the whole page and be usable, but still the loading bar on the bottom status part of the browser appears to be loading, etc.

The site is http://www.healinghealth.com (should have put that in my original post).

What’s disturbing to me on this problem is that we didn’t do much different from what we normally do (regarding whether or not we optimize, etc) but we got such a different result. The EE install is obviously loading up their server, and like I said, I doubt it’s EE - it has to be something we did, but I have no idea what that could be.

If I went trolling through my templates, what sort of bad code should spark a red flag?

Query caching is on, and nothing else looks useful from the usual caching/performance advice…

Question: how many embeds can you have in your template before it begins to churn up a bad load on the server? There are quite a few embeds (some simple code snippets like the html header coming in, etc) and some of them are in fairly complex {if} statements where different embeds come in depending on what entry is being called up. But how could that, even a fair number of them, cause such a HUGE load on a server?? Or, can it?

LynneL, as a first time visitor to the site, it came up for me almost instantaneously. However, you have several stats rendering pieces that might cause the site to load slowly.

Do you have any if logged_in code going on?
