Another vote for SafeCracker.
It’s a great implementation of the SAEF and CI Validation just makes it better.

While I think of it don’t forget to build in facilities for HTML5 input types, in particular the date and time types could be tied in with EE entry dates etc.

I hope it is not too late to post a suggestion but… I have given this some thoughts and the more I think about it, the more I think that if you were to build something similar to the wiki editing… that would be a very powerful feature.
Also I can’t help but think that merging the wiki and the channels (similar to what you did for the gallery being merged in the channel) would be a cool idea: better sharing of code and knowledge since there’s only one module to learn and, for you, only one module to maintain.

The custom fieldtypes already do what needs to be done. Just enable them to be used on SAEFs!

Are there any updates on this?

What were you looking for? This is an information gathering thread, giving us an idea what the community was looking for in a revised SAEF. We haven’t actually released such an update yet, if that’s what you were referring to.

Hi Ingmar,
Thanks for the reply. That’s actually what I was asking in regards to…
Are there any update to share on how the SAEF revisions are coming?

Good morning, Graham!
You can stay abreast of updates by following our Forecast page. The SAEF overhaul is the (as of this writing) last entry on that page.

Thanks for the link, Lisa.
The Forecast is great, but I was hoping there might be some additional information to share at this point, given that the Forecast entry hasn’t been updated since November… especially in response to this thread.
Can you give us an update of what specifically to expect from the revisions?
It’s extremely helpful for us as developers to know what’s coming down the pipe, to a) prepare for it, or b) find another solution if what we need isn’t going to be addressed.
SAEF in particular is a huge issue for some of us right now. For instance, Solspace’s Calendar SAEF functionality is completely broken for EE2… It works fine for EE1, and WOULD work fine in EE2 too, but doesn’t because of the way EE2 currently handles SAEF. Only by developing a site with EE2 did I discover this unfortunate fact. I’ve chatted at length with their developers and have learned that Solspace’s hands are tied until you address this. Beyond “features”, we’re talking about core functionality here… It’s a problem when things that worked in EE1 no longer work in EE2. It’s shaken my confidence in EL to see how long the SAEF issues have gone without even an update on your proposed plan to address this.
Are the SAEF revisions any further ahead than “now developing a plan”?
I’m sure I’m not alone in having active client projects on the burner that currently desperately need either improved (i.e. working) SAEF functionality, or to be rethought totally, possibly with another CMS. I love working with EE in general, but it’s very difficult to properly scope for future development when it’s unclear of what may or may not be coming. We need real information we can assess critically, not vague statements like “more useful, more intuitive”. This may sound promising, but this is simply not at all useful information to us as developers.
Consider how Wordpress does it: http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/process-and-scope-for-3-1-part-i/ - This post was made in September 2010. WP 3.1 (which it addresses) still isn’t out yet (RC2 is out, but if you note the schedule, that’s a delay of a month). All the same, these candid notes very clearly spell out what is being worked on, what ISN’T (and why) and leaves no doubt for countless of WP developers to plan ahead.
The Forecast is a great start, but a general paragraph about soliciting feedback and then no updates for 3+ months on a critical function (one that already worked in EE1 no less!) isn’t much of an improvement over nothing at all. Was this point about more transparency not exactly one of the big themes of “Kennygate”?
Sorry to be a bit sore on the point, but we *really* need to know what’s up with SAEF, or whether we should be looking at WP 3.1 instead.
Please give us some more information or update the Forecast with something. Anything.
Thank you!

“coyotes”, I think, evidenced here:

in the better Southwest senses…
edit: meant to get DevDemon in there as that’s where I heard to look - they’ve got lots of things that cooperate, apparently: Channel Images, Channel Files, Mega Upload , and Tagger. End quote.

Safecracker is great! I am using it on my current project. The only issue I am having is that it doesn’t seem to work with add-ons that create tabs. Examples being Sructure, Tags, and I assume SEO Lite.
So another vote for Safecracker as the base or something as good/better.
