php_mail Error when sending out message to mailing list

I am sending out a message to a mailing list of about 300 people using “communicate”. It has been working fine for about a year in ee1.6.8, and now in EE2 when i try and deploy i get this:

    email_send_failure_phpmail

What’s strange (and frustrating) is it still sends out some of the messages, usually around 30 or 40. Has anyone encountered this issue or have any suggestions?

I’ve tried sendmail, as well, same problem, and SMTP doesn’t seem to be an option because EE doesn’t support SSL.

    neongray,

What version and build of EE are you using?

Under your Email Configuration can you Enable Email Debugging
What is your batch setting set to?

Have you tried sending to just one email and seeing if that works for you.

    EE v2.1.1
    Build 20101020

    Email debugging is enabled.

    Batch Mode is off.

    Number per batch is empty.

The error was received w/ debugging on, batch mode off, and I was just sending one email to one recipient.

    Thanks 😊

When you turn on email debugging and send mail via the Communicate tab you should get a much more verbose report, are you not? Did that ever work before, or has it suddenly stopped working?

I don’t know if it ever worked because this is the first time I’ve tried to use it.

I am waiting for IT to upgrade us to the latest version.  If I am still having trouble, I will post again.

    blaiseymae,

Basically what the message means is that your server might not be configured to send mail using this method.
So let us know what your IT guys say

I’m having the exact same issue - I tried turning on debugging, but I still got the same error message as before (email_send_failure_phpmail).

I checked with my host, and mail() should be able to work.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Hi, shane. Have you tried sendmail? Can you send out individual emails using Communicate?

I just tried sendmail, and I get these errors:

“Unable to send email at this time.

    email_exit_status

    email_no_socket

    email_send_failure_sendmail”

After checking with my host, they told me that there may be optional arguments, which are
    interfering with sendmail:

    [our username]:/logs$ tail -1 error_log
    usage: /usr/sbin/sendmail [-f<name>] [-t] [-s<server>] [-p]
    [-T<timeout>] [-v] [address ...]

They also pointed me to this page in their hosting support docs: http://support.modwest.com/content/10/124/en/sendmail-does-not-work-or-does-not-accept-my-optional-arguments.html

Any idea what I may be able to do to fix this?

    shanecavaliere,

Can you copy email_test.php from system/expressionengine/utilities into your root and then visit it in your browser.

Switch back on PHP mail in your email preferences

If this doesn’t work then send the link to your host. This is just a simple mail form which should work if mail is working as your host said it was.
