    Heyo,

I have a client that wants a site which is basically structured like an eCommerce site -  with product categories, photos, descriptions, etc. - but they don’t actually want to sell anything via the site.

Here’s the catch: they need to be able to make their own product categories as they go along. So I can’t pre-program categories for them to choose from.

I can’t think of a good way for this client to create their own categories. I thought about using Structure, and creating a channel called “Product Category”, which they then could use to publish a category and use Structure’s “add page” button for a new product. But with that method the “Product Category” page uses the same channel and field group as the product page itself, meaning there couldn’t be a category overview page. And I don’t want the client to have to choose a different template every time they add a new product. Not to mention the file tree will start to get huge once the products add up.

Can anyone offer a suggestion for how I might accomplish this in a user-friendly manner?

Why don’t you use EE’s own Category system? Authors with the right permissions can then easily add and ediit category information.

That certainly is an option, I’m just nervous about doing that since giving the client access to the categories area also means giving them access to other channel options as well.

However EE2’s new dropdown menus make it a little harder for clients to get lost and break something. I’ll take it into consideration, bluedreamer.

Authors can edit categories directly from the publish page if you give their member group permission to do so, they don’t have to access the main Admin>Channel categories version.

Well butter my buns and call me a biscuit, you’re right! Fantastic, that’s what I’ll do then. Thanks bluedreamer, good advice.
