The content on my EE site is comprised of loosely related bits of data all about the same content- but really is not an article per se.

If my published item is ‘Cars’, am I wise to use seperate custom fields for data like ‘specifications’, ‘colors’, and ‘description’? Or would I be better off loading all that data into a conventional linear format like a conventional blog post? Can I get better templating usefulness through the former method?

If you split your data into several fields it then make site possible to manipulate your data a lot more. For instance, if you have a colour field then you could do things like let your visitors fiilter results, eg by showing cars of a certain colour, make or specification.
