as the title say, is it possible, (using the main registration form) for new members to choose the group they want? Thank you in advance

Are you using EE Core? It doesn’t even have the Member module.

Regardless of who it’s for: EE Core does not have the Member module. There is no way for people to signup without going through the backend.
