EE 1.6.8

Having a terrible time on certain pages timing out when trying to update the content. It’s been maddening, and no rhyme or reason that can tell me it’s consistently “this or that” that’s causing the time out issue.

I’ve searched through the forums without much luck for a similar post.

Updating the content is done via the Control Panel? Do you mean the CP pages are timing out for you? Are you using any extensions? You also might want to upgrade to 1.6.9, just so we’re all on the same page in terms of code.

Yes, the CP pages are timing out on updates or even when trying to submit new pages.

Going to do the 1.6.9 update sometime in the next day or so.

Extensions are: jQuery, crumblink, geo & htaccess_generator.

When troubleshooting the first thing I’d recommend is temporarily disabling extensions.

Does the front-end of the site timeout ever?

I’ve updated to 1.6.9, cleared the caches, disabled the extensions, and still getting timeouts.

The front end has never timed out, only when trying to publish or update certain content. It’s certainly strange, and very frustrating.

1. Can you let us know how much memory is dedicated to PHP?
2. Does this occur with another browser?

1. Php memory - 128(local) & 30(master)
2. Yes, all browsers (Firefox, Chrome, & Safari tested)

What are you getting exactly? A blank page? Are there any error messages in your server (or PHP) error log?

The standard “Page Not Found” server taking too long error message. In looking into the php error log, just discovered that the log_errors is set to OFF. Looks like I’ll have to go through the host to set that to ON.

Is there a log of some sorts within EE? I didn’t see one in the PHP Admin area.

Hi Carlos,

The PHP error log would be the one to check. It could also be an issue with your database server.

Who is your host, and do you by chance have a local copy of the site where you can reproduce this?

Alright, working on getting the logging turned on. We’re hosted in a windows environment, Crystal Tech is their name.

Boo. Not so good news. We’re on a shared hosting setup, and there’s no way that they will turn on PHP error logging.

I can’t say I have had success with Crystal Tech as a host for EE before.

You mentioned you are using htaccess_generator but you are on a Windows environment so you won’t be able to use a htaccess in this case

only when trying to publish or update certain content.

When you say ‘certain’ content what are you referring to specifically?

Can you double check your folder permissions please.

Also give the Server Wizard a run please

Right John, that’s an apache thing.

Ran the wizard, the only one that’s not supported is: “URL Segment Support.”
MySQL checked out fine as well. The site has been on Cyrstal Tech for over a yr now.

I wish I could say that it’s only content that has markup tags, or a story copied out of Word, etc., but there’s not consistent set of variables that allows me to begin the process of elimination.

For example, we have a “People Directory” section of our site for Faculty/Staff each having their contact info as well as their bio. There’s one particular bio that I cannot update using the full bio text. It’s 1600 characters long, so not crazy. No tags whatsoever. Just straight text. And there’s other just random time-outs occurring that might be for our newswire or calendar. Baffling.
