I am trying to setup a development site for a client using a 1.6.3 build. The hosting company they use is having trouble maintaining a correct system path redirect (I know, this is making me crazy) after I followed Erskine labs method of creating a duplicate site.

The solution I had to come up with is to copy the system folder over to the subdomain, while using the same database. I know this isn’t an officially supported method, but I’d rather not have to purchase MSM just for this purpose.

My question is, are there any serious issues with going down this route? Is there anything that I can do to make my life easier? The hosting issues threw me for a loop and I’m in *personally* uncharted waters now.

I advise against using 1.6.3 for a new site in the strongest possible terms. This version is two and a half years’ old: if you don’t want to move on to EE 2 yet, at least use a recent build of EE 1.6.9. Your support options will otherwise be severely limited since none of us uses a version this old anymore.

My question is, are there any serious issues with going down this route?

As you say, this is not officially supported, but people have been running multiple domains before the MSM, too. If it works I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
