Just wondered if anyone uses an iPad for writing CI apps on? I mostly use my netbook and main desktop, but I find the lure of an iPad very attractive! But I can’t really buy one unless I can also use it for work, and not just fund (Angry birds etc.!) Thoughts welcome.

Coding on a touch screen with my fingers just doesn’t sound very attractive. Purchasing a cheap laptop for the same amount that you can purchase an iPad for sounds far better in my opinion. I’m writing this reply on a laptop with a 15.6” screen, DVD / CD burner, card reader, 64 bit dual core processor, Windows 7, etc for only $500AUD.

An iPad is a couple hundred more here, honestly not worth the aluminium it’s covered in.

Why on earth would you ever do that?

Why not? That’s what I’m trying to establish.

It would be funny 😊 To have something like Coda on iPad!

I heard good things about the iPad. One guy was editing spreadsheets on it, and much of his other work apparently (and loved it). Never heard of anyone writing code on it.

personally the idea of coding on an ipad is quite intriguing. If i had an ipad i would test this theory out. Would deff. be alot easier than using my laptop when i lay in bed watching tv, and work at same time (i have a rather large laptop, 18.4 widescreen, + all the bells and whistles).

if anyone here has an ipad and is willing to giver a go, let us all know know how i goes. would deff. be a clincher to me buying an ipad.

Yes if anyone has one that Rolly can have please pass it on to him… after you give one to me first :p There are a nice bit of kit, but I have a sneaky feeling that iPad 2 will be out soon, in 2 form factors and with a camera for facetime etc.

well now, if someone wanted to GIVE me a ipad that would be totally awesome, if a bit retarded. lol

what i mean is if someone has a ipad here and wanted to test out the ability to code on one and share their findings it would be great. 😛

Never used one.  Does it have a full keyboard?  I wouldn’t even try if it didn’t…like the iPhone.  Having to hit several keys to get to symbols and then not have all of the symbols would suck.

    It does: http://www.google.com/images?q=ipad+keyboard
But just letters it seems. You need an external keyboard for coding I’d guess.

Actually, there are 3 apps that I know of that allow you to edit code and FTP/SFTP to a server on the iPad:

    Gusto
    Markup
    and HTML Edit

They all work quite similarly, and would be find for a quick emergency fix, but I doubt I’d want to build a whole app on one.

I don’t see how working on an iPad would be more productive, you would get only frustration..
I had a thought to buy another big monitor(didn’t gave up yet) in order to increase the productivity, so anyway, going to a smaller scale would not help anyone development steps, i am sure of that .

    But question, what’s wrong with using a PC/laptop ??? come on ...
