I tried to fix this once before, but forget the exact way to address it.

Members seem unable to reset their passwords when they forget them! I get about one request a day as per the below. Everything works (email, forms) except the password reset does not work!

    Any hints??
I think I tried it myself once - and it DID work!

I have tried two times to reset my password with the temp password you sent me and your website still doesn’t recognize the password you sent me.  Suggestions?

I found that not having correct site path in the “Admin > System Preferences > General Configuration” page has caused password resets to not work properly for me in the past.

    Thanks for the suggestion!
The only questionable setting there is:

URL to the root directory of your site
This is the directory containing your site index file.

Since I don’t actually have a EE related site index file (my home page is hand written and outside of EE) , I put a url path into one of the EE folders.
I will change it to the site root….....that is hearth.com with no other directories…..and hope it works.

Sorry to say, that didn;t work! Entire site messed up when I tried changing root direction to the actual http://www.hearth.com/ main page…...as mentioned, my front page has nothing to do with EE…......

in other words, my control panel URL is something like

    hearth.com/econtent/eecc/index.php
my content is at places likeL
    http://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/
    other content at-
    http://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/articles/choosing_and_using_wstove

so I have my site root set as:
    http://www.hearth.com/econtent/
even though no content lives there.

Does that sound right? Any other ideas on the password reset problem?

Craig, you mentioned going to EE2.1.. are you going to be having EE run the whole site in that case?

It pretty much runs the whole site anyway - except for one small section (stove ratings) and the front page and a stray page here and there….
So I don’t think there will be any changes at first -I have moved some of the single pages to the Pages module, but not the front page (as one example).

I suppose I will continue along those lines - but as it stands, 90% plus of the site is EE. It’s just that it does not have a formal setup with a specific site root in EE (as per the above).

    Hi Craig,

Having your site root as http://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php looks right in this case. Which version and build of EE and the forums are you using?

    Cheers

This problem has gone on through a number of versions, but currently 1.6.8 and 2.1.2

It might be that only some are not working….since I have no way of knowing if others went through. As mentioned, I tried it myself once with another account I have (as a more regular user) and I think it worked.

Yet I constantly get emails from people it does not work for.

Am I to understand that this issue has never been reported? It seems strange I’d be the only one to ever have the situation, but anything is possible!

    Hi handyman,

Is there an .htaccess file in the site root? If so, try renaming it temporarily. Then go ahead and attempt the password reset and let us know if it works for you.

There is one in the true site root, of course! (http://www.hearth.com)
But not one in the EE listed site root…

I will give that a try….or, the next time someone complains I will ask them to do so after I quickly rename the .htaccess….

But, what would be the solution to that? My htaccess file redirects a lot of old stuff…....

We have to rule out .htaccess being an factor in the problem.

    I’m stumped again!

I started another account as another type of member and the whole system worked for me.

I wonder if it is a cache issue similar to the people who cannot register (the captha does not work, etc.)......or, if the people are just crazy and not following correct instructions.

Either way, mark this one closed until I make 100% sure that this is repeatable. Sorry for the PITA.

If it works for you, this should rule out a general rewriting issue, I agree. It might be a cache issue but there are certainly other possibilities as well. Closing for now as requested, please don’t hesitate to start a new thread if there are any news.
