    Hi,

I released new versions of some of my add-ons. The earlier versions were posted into forum threads which are now archived.

I would like to take off those older versions in order not to confuse those who use my add-ons, but archived threads are impossible to edit.

    What should be done?

    Thanks.

TSS staff can still edit those entries, just let us know which ones, and where you’re going to be storing the newer ones.

    Hi Sue,

I sent you private message with a list of archived forum threads from which I would like to delete the files.

    Thank you very much.

It turns out I don’t have edit permissions after all, so will request Lisa do it. Thanks in advance for your patience.

    Hi, Laisvunas -

We’re not going to be able to remove those attachments for you; however, each of the threads you sent now have a bold message at the top, with the link to your Devot-ee download page.

    Hi Lisa,

    Thanks for this solution.

But it seems that I as the author should have the possibility to remove the files I don’t want to share anymore.

What for example, if I decide to turn some of my add-ons into commercial ones? - EllisLab should not force me to share them for free in such case.

    Hi, Laisvunas -

I would think that if you were going to make an add-on commercial from free, that would also include new features or changes, such that running older versions wouldn’t be that desirable.  That is how it has been done in the past, in any case.

Are you intending on making many of the current versions of these add-ons, as posted, commercial?

    Hi Lisa,

Yes, I’m currently considering making significant portion of my add-ons commercial, some of them after minor changes or bug fixes and some without changing anything in their code.

All of your add-ons have been released either as Freeware (“you may use this code for any purpose, commercial or private, without any further permission from the author”) or under other free licenses such as the GPL in some cases and a CC “Attribution” or CC “Attribution/Share Alike” one in all others. In legal as well as practical terms your code is out there, free for anyone to use, modify, fork, redistribute, even sell.

I understand your desire to “commercialize” your add-ons, as it were, but I think your best option is really to offer significantly improved versions under a new, commercial license.

    Hi Ingmar,

Yes, it is free to redistribute those versions I released under opensource licences if anyone has such wish. So, anyone can write a blog post and attach those files for download.

But EllisLab should not force ME to distribute them either through EE forums or for free or both. I wrote those forum entries and I attached add-on files to them, so it’s ME who share them in this case. But I don’t want to continue this way. Now I uploaded the files of all my add-ons to devot-ee.com and I want it to be the only channel through which I distribute my add-ons.

EE forums were once a great venue to distribute and discuss add-ons, butt EllisLab suddenly reorganized forums without any prior notice to developers and without giving a time to adjust to the changes.

So it seems that I as the author can justifiedly ask forum moderators to delete the files I do not want to share through EE forums.

Thank you for your feedback, Laisvunas. Since this is not really a matter of Tech Support as such I am going to move this thread to “General”. I encourage you to contact our Director of Community Services, Lisa Wess, privately in this matter. Thanks.

Not wanting to sound like I"m having a go at EllisLab or anything but I do feel pretty much the same way on this one myself.

Yes I totally understand that what we have put out there for free is exactly that and that anyone who has the file(s) can use that code in any way they so wish but not being able to somehow limit it after the act of posting it on a forum is a little odd.

I’ve never downloaded the forum software so don’t know why it’s not possible to allow people to edit posts with the way the forums are now but I do believe people should have the ability to be able to edit them.

Just my two pennies worth though 😉

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Emailing Laisvunas off-forums.  Thanks all.  I’m going to close this thread since we are now handling it off-forum.
