Sorry to bother you all, but an attempt - assisted by an EE tech - to get FreeForm to work has resulted in no FreeForm (which is fine, really, in comparison) and completely FUBAR javascript throughout a number of our sites on MSM. Anyone who can help, please look at http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo, http://www.sandiegozoo.org/park and http://www.sandiegozoo.org/conservation. sIFR and swfobject and AC_RunActiveContent have stopped working in those three sites.  I have tried upgrading them, downgrading them, moving them into and out of EE, linking using EE tags and straight HTML… I cannot leave the sites like this, and I do not know what was done by the EE tech within the sites.  This was caused by something one of us did either last night or this morning. I am desparate.  Thank you for any help you can give.

sandiegozoo - can you let me know with who you worked, so I can try to help investigate what may have occurred here?  If you’re not comfortable making that public, please click the “MSG” icon and email me directly.

    Thank you.

    Hi, Kristin -

This appears to be a change due to a third-party (not an EE Support Staff member) making changes on the site.  Unfortunately we are not able to troubleshoot these changes, so it will be necessary to follow up with the person that made them.

Sorry we weren’t able to help more on this. :(  Please keep us updated if you find out what the problem was.

Kristin - in looking at this further, please make sure that in Admin > System Preferences > Output and Debugging, you have “Debug Preference” set to 1: PHP Errors shown to Superadmins.

Figured out that this was the problem via trial and error. Wow, tho. A day-long goose-chase. All the debug had been turned on to find out why FreeForms wasn’t working, so when I turned them all off after giving up, it broke Javascript… Is this a bug that will be addressed at some point?

    Thank you.

    Kristin,

No, this is intended behaviour. We specifically recommend always keeping this Debug Preference set to “1: PHP/SQL error messages shown only to Super Admins.” This setting must be 1 in order for Javascript to function, or ExpressionEngine will hide Javascript output believing it to be an error.

    Sir -

While the behavior might be intended, it is not clear to the user AT ALL. Perhaps, then, the labeling of the Debug Preference should be considered a bug for its lack of clarity. Just sayin’.

    Kristin,

Apologies if you found it unclear. You are welcome though to make a feature request if you have any ideas on how we could make it more clearer.
