performance issues

    Hi,
I’m having real performance issues with a new site I have built on a rackspace box.  I have built about 10 other EE sites, and never had the performance issue at all.  They are all still loading instantly almost—even when they have many tags calling data from many different channels, etc.  I am using the same version of EE as I have on other sites—1.6.8.
    Please help me.

I have created a page that just has flat text and calls a few small images from the top level image directory.  No embeds, no php, no tags, no queries—nothing dynamic, no js headers, nothing.  Just—html, with 4 images and some text.

When I put this page at my top level and point to:
    http://mydomain/thispage.html
    It loads instantly.

When I put this exact same code into a db template, via CP and point to:
    http://mydomain/site/thispage
It loads about 4x slower.  This is very significant.  For this particular page, it’s not that annoying, because the page is very very light.  but for the larger pages the client has, it is very troubling.  Every click we hang and wait for.

I have gone thru all the docs and done all the caching and stuff, but have seen no difference—and as I am learning from this new page I created, it’s because the slowness if not about a query or template, but seems to be related to the overall system.

Can you pleae advice on what strategy I should use to address this performance issue?  I am calling rackspace now, but I don’t believe it’s their problem, I thin it’s my EE install, and it’s a real problem for the client, and for me.

    Thanks so much,
    Phoebe

    Hi Phoebe,

We’ve had a similar issue in the past, apparently caused by Rackspace’s files actually residing on NFS storage.

Let us know what Rackspace says, as its almost certainly an issue with the particular server this Rackspace account is hosted on.

    Thanks for the info.

I talked to Rackspace and they made a few changes, not sure what they were, but they helped a lot.  We have a dedicated box, at the clients request, so I think we avoid the “cloud” issues w/ Rackspace.  The site is acceptable now… not super fast, but acceptable.  I’m going to ask them aboutthe NFS issue and maybe increase my PHP memory just a bit as well.

Thanks for the links and info…..

Sounds good, Phoebe. I’ll close this for now while you work with the host, but feel free to open a new thread.
