    Hi,
I am planning to have my site on load balancing setup. I would like to know how the CMS would work then? Can i install it on all 3 servers? We are planning to have all the servers rsync’d…

Would appreciate if you can get back on the same asap.

    Thanks,
    Vikas

    Hi Vikas,
Do you mean from a licencing view point?

    Hi, Vikas,

Each installation needs its own license.  Ideally, the load balancing should be completely invisible to ExpressionEngine - that is how EngineHosting handles it.  3 separate installations that are rsync’d is not something that will work with EE.  Your database IDs will get out of whack, caches will get confused, etc.

    Hi,

So you mean to say we cant have load balancing servers for expressionengin.

Is there any solution for the same?

    Vikas,

There are many examples of ExpressionEngine being deployed on load balanced clusters.  For instance, EngineHosting load balances everything.  The key is shared network storage so there is one (1) installation of ExpressionEngine that is mounted on as many web servers as you need.  Due to the way ExpressionEngine is designed, if you wish to load balance, this type of setup is a must.

Does that help, Vikas? Please let us know if there’s anything else we can do for you.

We have to use Mirror servers for backup purposes.. which will be used only when the primary server goes down.
Will the same license do? What is the protocol for the same?

Please note Both the servers are going to be rsynched

can the application server & database rest on two diff servers.

Yes, so long as only one site is live, you can have a backup installation.

You can move EE around to different servers as needed.

Does that help answer your questions?

Yes, the db does not have to reside on the same server as EE.

That is fine, from a purely licensing point of view. As long as only one site is active (i.e., publicly accessible) at any one time, you’re good. A switchover / server backup is not an issue.

What is the protocol for the same?

    Sorry, the protocol for what?

Please note Both the servers are going to be rsynched

Are you expecting many file uploads and such? Otherwise it’s the database you should be concerned about, not so much the physical files.

can the application server & database rest on two diff servers.

Yes, EE can use an external MySQL db server.

Moving a site is certainly possible. It’s not fully automatic, though. Please take a look at this article.

    Hello,

We have a live website which is running on .net platform. We want to move it to EE. How do we do it?

If we buy the license how can we get it up and running on a different server where we will customize it. Can i set the website/EE on beta.xyz.com <http://beta.xyz.com>  and then when i am ready with it change it to http://www.xyz.com <http://www.xyz.com> ? How do we go about doing this? I cannot pull my current website down…

Yes, of course. You can install EE into a subdirectory, on some other developing server, even on a local server and move everything over once it’s done.
