Hi all - I have a client asking whether we can do proper, print-resolution coupons and membership cards directly from an EE site.  I know it’s perhaps less of an EE question and more a fundamental “how to handle printing from the browser” question, but i thought i would put it out there to see if anyone has any experience in this area and might have a few tips for me.  The site they want to build is extremely barebones:

    1. Welcome Screen with registration form

A simple single-page welcome screen with their branding, etc. along with a welcome message and a registration form.  Complete the registration form and you are directed to…

    2. Thanks and Print Your Card Screen

A single-page of “thanks” language, along with an on-screen mockup of their personalized membership card or coupon, with a button below it for “print your card”, which leads you to

    3. a print dialog box that includes only the card for printing.  These are intended to be wallet size, so trim lines would likely be included with a fold mark so they get a front and back side with the same output.  The card would include print-resolution logo, etc. for the company in question, as well as include the registrant’s name (carried from their registration) and also some unique numbering (to prevent duplication, etc. since the coupon is to be redeemed in-store for a free sample)

Is this achievable?  I’m not asking for a “how to” just a yes or no, and if yes, here’s the basic considerations you should keep in mind.

    Thanks all.

    John.

This can be accomplished in two basic ways (that I’ve used).

Either you can have a print css file that only shows the appropriate coupon image,

or you can have the coupons in a PDF document to ensure that they are printed properly and to scale.

This can be accomplished with pretty much any CMS out there, and ExpressionEngine is more capable than most to get exactly what you want done.

Thanks HD.  Yes, I’ve started to look into the print.css option, if only because there are certain things i need to be able to do in the browser since the coupon has to be customized on the fly (so it’s custom per person).  That seems like the way to go.  I’m reviewing a tutorial specifically on that at css-tricks.com and hopefully it’s cover all the bases i want to cover.  Main thing I want to be sure of is that things like the company logo get used at a 300dpi resolution when the customer goes to print it so that the piece they get is high quality and the logo doesn’t have that fuzziness that you normally get with web-resolution imagery.

    Thanks again!

PDF document is the best way to ensure and check the coupon, it just let you make it good and have no blurry effect anymore. Moreover, i have also used it and it gives a very great results. Thanks again for posting.
