Moving server and upgrading at same time

Hi - I have EE 1.6.7 installed on a shared hosting server which will not take the upgrade to 2.x because the MySQL version is too old and the host will not update it under that plan. So I am staying with the same host but moving to a managed VPS which has all the right software - I have run EE Wizard for 2.0 and everything is OK. I have acquired an EE 2.0 licence and also downloaded 2.1 ready for this.

    1) Should I move the database first, then install 2.1, then move all the templates, image files etc? Or is there a better process for doing this?

    2) Also because the domain name is moving too, but not until the new site is ready to go, I will need to get the files working with another domain name first - is it easy to change domain names within EE via weblog administration, for example?

Would be grateful for advice - and any other tips you have for this situation. Many thanks.

    Hi, silverdart -

We never recommend moving *and* upgrading at the same time.  It introduces too many potential points of failure or confusion.

I would recommend either moving, getting it working, then upgrading; or upgrading, getting it working, then moving.

You wouldn’t use a separate installation, you would use thesse upgrade instructions.

See moving EE to another server for instructions on upgrading and what changes to make.

Also - this isn’t pre-sales so I’m going to move it down to General for you.

Thanks, Lisa - the ‘moving EE’ link is v helpful. I will proceed as recommended.

The link for ‘How do I move EE to another server?’ is good except that it applies to moving EE 2.0 sites - whereas I am moving my 1.6.7 site and trying to get it going first, as suggested, before upgrading.

The file structure for 2.0 is different, so the point 5 on the instructions does not apply to my current site file structure. So I am having to do a bit of guesswork about what files to edit for paths etc and clearly I have not been guessing correctly.

I am connected to the database, but the pages are not displaying - and while I can access the CP, it just shows the CP data without a CP theme, so it looks rather odd.

Before going further, I would like to ensure that I have updated and edited the correct files (1.6.7) - can anyone help? I cannot find another relevant doc on the EE site, but I may have missed it. Thanks.

Hey, it’s OK. I have solved the problem after a lot of trial and error - the site is now up and running just dandy on the new server. I now have to upgrade to EE 2.1, then it’s done.

I feel just like Eddie the Eagle…

    Hi silverdart,

Okay. Glad that you got your site moved ok. I’m going to close this thread but don’t hesitate to post back and create a related thread if you run into any problems during the upgrade to 2.1.

    Cheers

    Greg
