categories not showing in control panel

Hi there,

I have kind of an interesting bug where I can pull the category list from within a channel entries loop, but the categories are not visible within the control panel, nor can they be accessed within the channel categories loop. So to clarify:

{categories backspace="1"} {category_name},{/categories}

within the channel entries loop shows the categories as it should. However:

{exp:channel:categories channel="blog" style="linear" show_empty="no"}

{category_name}

{/exp:channel:categories}

does not return anything nor can I see any categories within the control panel.

I’ve imported nearly 1000 posts using the MT Import in EE 1.6.9 and then upgraded to EE 2.1 build 20100810 so I’m guessing it’s some sort of database issue.

Not to be all desperate sounding, but it’s a client project and we were counting on being able to import all his existing posts, so I sure hope there’s a way to fix this.

Thanks in advance,
-John

Hi John,

Is your exp_categories table fully populated?

Cheers

Yes, it does look to be fully populated. What else should I check?

When you attempt to edit one of these entries, are you seeing any categories there?

When you manually assign a category to an entry, does that work? Just how did you import the MT entries?

Yes manually adding a category to the entry works, but it deletes all the categories that are currently somehow partially associated with the entry as described above.

I used the MT Importer included in EE 1.6.9 and then upgraded the site to EE 2.1.

I really don’t want to lose all the categories or have to do anything manual with 1000 posts. Can I provide a login or something for someone to look at first hand?

Hi John,

If you go to CP Home > Administration > Category Management are the category groups defined as expected after your import?

Cheers

John,
there is probably a mismatch of information here somewhere.
Did you see any issue in 1.6.9 before upgrade?
Can you share with us an example of the MT Export file you used for the import please?

No I didn’t see any issues in 1.6.9, but I also didn’t really dive in too deep there. I saw the categories showed in the template, so I just assumed it was good to go.

Here’s an excerpt of the file I used: http://drp.ly/1EAEei
(I was getting “Error Message: The file you are attempting to upload has invalid content for its MIME type.” when I tried to attach the file directly to this message.)

Did you use Auto Create Categories, if so with or without sub-categories? Have these categories been created?

I don’t remember all the exact settings, but yes, I had it create categories without sub-categories.

Have these categories been created?

And that’s the issue, in some senses it looks like all the categories have been created, but in other ways they don’t show at all. To recap, they don’t show anywhere in the control panel, they don’t show in the exp:channel:categories loop, but they do show using the ‘categories’ tag pair within the exp:channel:entries loop.

It’s like they’re all in the database but not fully connected or something.

John, do you have a backup of the site in its 1.6.9 state? Or is it possible to re-run the MT import on a clean 1.6.9 installation and make sure that is working before we bump to 2.1?

Yea, I guess I could re-run it on a clean 1.6.9 install… This project has kind gotten bumped down a notch though, so give me a few days 😉
