Three weeks have past since the release of MojoMotor! (has it really been that long?)

MojoAddons launched on day one (about 5 minutes after the MojoMotor site went live to be exact), providing a selection of commercial addons for MojoMotor users. Since then we’ve continued to update the addons and post new ones.

We’re off to a great start! We’ve received a lot of positive feedback, alongside a little helpful criticism here and there, and now we’re getting ready to launch into high gear.

We want to become the go-to people for commercial third-party MojoMotor addons. But to do that, we really need to know what you want out of the site.

So fire away. Feel free to post on here or contact me directly. Let us know what you want to see, whether on the site itself, or what kind of addons you’re looking for.

Thanks to all for a great start! I hope to hear from as many of you as possible.

It’d be great to be able to buy multiple add-ons at the same time from MojoAddons.com so I can do my rounds all in one place, just like I do at Devot-ee!

    WHAT DOES GOOGLE KNOW!?!?!?

Stupid stupid pagerank. I command you to link to our site on every page. And surrender thine pagerank.

    Ok. Kidding.

    win xD

Anyways, I think a nice register your addon form would be nice. It could really be a contact form, that you’ve modified for your needs.

Please take this as constructive criticism.

I’m not going to go through each add on and say what I think is or isn’t cool, but the main problem I have with many of these is I don’t get what they do. Or when I do understand what they do I don’t get why doing it as an add on is better.

Like the PayPal and Twitter client. Doing these as a hard coded widget or even dropping the form in as plain text works, so why this way?

Minors confuses me. If I read it right (and I am probably not). It would cause you to create a bunch of orphaned pages, then use those pages as includes in a layout sort of how EE does with invisible pages? Now you have a slew of pages out there with a bit on content on each. That seems weird.

Or like Outfielder, even after reading the description I still don’t get what it does. Ok, so I get what it does, but how is that helpful to me? For nearly half the price of mojo itself I’d hope it does something nearly as cool and I, for the life of me, don’t understand what I’d want it for even if it were free.

If someone were to buy every add on it would cost $140.50 (if my math is right). Obviously no one needs everything, but if you go through the list and pick out the things that most people would (or should want) you still come up with a decent chunk of money.

I guess I’d like to see some in depth descriptions of what each add on does and a live example (screen shots are ok).

I also would like to see some of these features rolled into the core product. I hold out hope that M’Sync, Pieces, and Backup will have their functionality reproduced in MM. If that happens I’ve spent $30 to have the functionality until then. This seems odd to me in that if Derek does roll something like one of these things into the product he could risk coming off like a jerk thief. If he doesn’t roll in something like Pieces then his customers could be resentful that essential functionality is missing (I realize everyone measures “essential” differently).

You may also consider a “professional” level license. Lets say someone launched a business deploying MM sites. Well, buying each add on you would like to deploy to each site is probably prohibitive or just annoying to keep legal on. So volume licensing or package licensing might be cool. ““Pick four for $40” or “10 Pack of Back Up” or “Master Collection Unlimited.”

Or maybe offer something like a $50 a year subscription to the software on your site. Then I don’t have to feel burned if mojo rolls the functionality into the core product or if I decide I no longer care to have my tweets on my page.

So essays on why each product was developed and what need it fulfills would rock. Some insight to the development (a dev blog) would be way cool.

I was going to send this to you in a PM, but I think a lot of it comes off a bit jerkish and it’s not meant to be. Just because I don’t get what a product does doesn’t mean that the people it’s marketed to won’t get it. Also, sorry this rambles.

I love what guys are doing so far. I use a bunch of your add-ons on mojohacks.com. The only thing I would like to see is some sort of backend members area to download new versions of add-ons, if possible. Also if you could integrate support for Dan Horrigan Equipment that would be great. That way it would be easier to know if I am rocking the latest version.

    Thanks,

    Nick

    Alright, here goes nothing:

    1) I agree some of the descriptions are too simple, and not many examples are given.  There are a few (mine included) that have links to the full docs which explain it better.  However, a majority do not.

    2) If Derek rolled out something that would destroy one of the addons (I am going to use M’Sync here), he would not be held as a “jerk thief” (nice word by the way).  Let’s be frank for a minute, we are all in this to make money.  Yes, we all (or most) love doing it, however, we all need to eat.  If he writes something into the core that destroys M’Sync, I have no problem with that…he has to make the product better so more people buy it (not that it isn’t awesome now).  If he doesn’t roll something like that out, then someone can buy the addon.  It would not be wasted money, you would have gotten use out of it.

Let’s not forget people…they are not that expensive.  $150 (to buy all of them) is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount you are making on the project at hand. This is because if you need ALL the addons on there, it is probably an involved site.

I am stepping of the soap box now, but before I do, I would just like to say…lets not start another “EVERYTHING SHOULD BE FREE” thread here.  If it does I will nag Derek until he closes it 😛

    Dan,

I wasn’t making an argument for free. I don’t think the prices for many of these plugins are too pricey. I don’t get why someone would use some of these even if they were free was my argument. Take Birdie or the PayPal one. Integrating either of these into a website is fairly easy and well documented from each company. So what do I gain by doing it as an add on? I’m not against spending $25 if it does it better or easier.

It would not be wasted money, you would have gotten use out of it.

    Depends on how much use.

Also, not everyone makes money on websites. I’m guessing a large portion of EE’s client base are people who buy it for their own use. The focus is usually on the developers and designers, since they are doing the coolest stuff with it. There are a lot of hobbyists out there and non-profits or small business folks as well.

If you had a site that required ALL of those plugins you wouldn’t be making a lot of money, you’d be doing it wrong. At that point you’d have a site that is too involved for MM (in my opinion).

For better or worse you are developing for a platform that only costs $50. When viewed as a percentage cost you want to make sure it does enough to justify the add on. This is exacerbated as you multiply it out over additional sites. If I add in an additional cost per site I have to look at whether or not MM will make as much sense. For $50 plus 3 add ons I’m in the realm of an EE Freelancer license. I’ve also stepped up significantly in complexity (nullifying one of the draws of MM).

Please include more documentation for the addons, including all available tags.  Screenshots would be helpful, as well.

The addon list is quickly becoming unwieldy.  Add quick links to the top of the page or separate addons by category (time to upgrade to ExpressionEngine?)

And if you need to buy all the addons, save yourself some pain and just get ExpressionEngine 😉 (I wonder how much it would cost to purchase all the EE addons?)

In reply to Nick, we do provide a members area. When you make your first purchase (and all subsequent purchases after that) you get a link that takes you to a customized download center that always has the latest version available for download.

Replying to Aaron. Actually we are looking at upgrading to EE, as I agree the site’s getting unwieldy already. Seems kind of sacrilegious, but I definitely want to add the flexibility of categories, more documentation, etc.

It seems we’re all kind of going down the same path here for what we’re looking for.

A minor point: I believe the same products have been on the front page every time I look. A jquery slideshow thing would rule for showcasing them all.

    Jeremy,

Sorry I never read all the way to the bottom of the emails where it has the link to my customer portal. I was just using the first download link. The download area is very nice. It would be nice however to have the current version listed so I could see if my versions are outdated at a glance.
