Hi,
In considering an update from 1.x to 2, I’m concerned about cobbling a work-around for Gallery relationship custom fields. We have a large number of entries using that to call images into posts; if the Gallery Module is deprecated, will the relationship disappear? or does it still work? Anyone have any experience with that? Thanks!

Yes - that functionality would currently disappear. IMHO if you’re heavily invested in the Gallery module I’d hold off upgrading until a migration tool is provided.
