Testing email module locally

One thing that consistently bothers me about developing an EE site on my local XAMPP install is that email-related functions don’t work. 9 times out of 10 the email works once the site is introduced to the staging/production environment but I’d like to be able to test beforehand. This may not be possible, but I was wondering if there’s any way to get EE’s email module working on a local server. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong category, I just wasn’t sure where else to put it.

You will have to install a local mail server as well. I have never had issues with that on my local Linux box.

Since this is not exactly a Tech support issue as such I’ll move it to the CodeShare Corner.

Thanks, I guess it was sort of stupid for me to assume that XAMPP came with a mail server too. I’ll check into that.

I think it does, actually. You might have to enable it, though.

Nice tip, I didn’t know this was possible.

I’ve been doing quite the Google spree and maybe I’m just using the wrong search terms but I’m seeing a lot of documentation for doing this on a PC but nothing substantial for us Mac folk. Anybody have experience setting up a local mail server on their Mac to work alongside XAMPP?

Wouldn’t you use MAMP for that? I’m pretty certain MAMP Pro has such as something like that built in.

It sure does. I was being cheap and using XAMPP because it’s free, but the 60 bucks for MAMP Pro is a small price to pay to be able to test emails locally. I got it setup and working within about 20 minutes, the catch is you have to have access to an SMTP server somewhere on the internet. If you have a web host like MediaTemple you can just instruct MAMP to piggyback on its SMTP server for your email sending.
