This may be a weird question, but when I started using Expression Engines the window where you edit the contents of templates was a reasonable size - (i.e., the same width and about twice the height of this window).

For some reason in the last few weeks first one and now all of my template windows has “shrunk”—they are now the same width, but are only about a quarter of an inch high. This makes it extremely difficult to locate text within the window, as well as to cut and paste. You can only see a line or two of your code at a time and are constantly having to scroll.

I’m unaware of having done anything to cause this to happen, and cannot find any information on how to restore the windows to their original heights. Would be quite grateful for any advice you can give.

    BTW, I’m using version 1.6.7 - Build:  20090515

    Thanks.

    Hi Hoopsgal,

Firstly, if you can upgrade to version 1.6.9 I recommend that you do so. Can you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing? Also, please list the extensions you have installed.

    Cheers

    Greg

Here is the screen shot attached.

I don’t think I’ve installed any extensions. (Is there a place I would go to ascertain this?) I have a number of the modules enabled, e.g., discussion forums and the like. I also installed the CSG grab.

I’d like to upgrade, but I don’t know how. I read the instructions in the users guide, but they were a bit over my head. The software is installed on the server (I use enginehosting.com) and I’m scared if I screw up I’ll lose all the entries that make up the site. I could really use a “For Dummies” version.

    Hi Hoopsgal,

Where it says ‘Template Size’ and it’s shown as a zero change that to something else like ‘28’. That will restore a sensible editing window for you.

With regards to upgrading, it’s really quite straightforward if you take things slowly and carefully. In the first instance contact EngineHosting and ask them about making a backup of your site and its database. Who installed your site for you?

    Cheers

    Thanks, Greg.

I never noticed the “template size” before. Now I feel a bit foolish.

EngineHosting installed the site in the first place. They’re supposed to make daily back-ups, but there’s been at least one instance where that failed to happen (or, more likely, was overwritten before it was supposed to be).

    Hoopsgal,

Glad you are up and running again. Regarding your backups. I would suggest contacting EngineHosting and telling them what you wish to do and to confirm they have backups for you if things do go wrong but follow Greg’s advice and you should be fine. Feel free as always to start a new thread if you have any more questions.
