One of the reasons I am seriously considering Expression Engine is the beautiful forum that is fully integrated. However, I’ve read that it’s actually very difficult to integrate the native forum in your website like seen here. Is that true?

EE 2 made working with the forum theme easier; but you still do need to style it separately. It really depends what you want to do - if you are styling the CSS and surrounding HTML it’s fairly straightforward. If you want to totally redo the whole layout, it can be a bit more involved.
