    Hi,

I am about to set up 3 sites next to my current site (1.6.9) and I am not sure if I should opt for extra licenses or buy the MSM. I have read the characteristics of MSM and understand all sites will make use of the same database. Can you tell me if there is a difference in performance going for the MSM solution or with a single license for each site?

    Regards,
    Tammo

    Hi, Tammo -

There is no difference in performance, unless one site, of course, gets overly busy and your server environment can’t handle it.

Are these sites you own and not client sites?  Things to be aware of include that membership is installation-wide, and sites can not be easily split out of the MSM.

    Hi Lisa,

These sites are my own, they are just registered domain names at this moment and I want to do something with them. I have a dedicated server and will host them there. I guess that membership groups can be applied per site when using MSM? Further I did read about the difficulties splitting up the site from MSM in the Wiki. That is a downside but I guess by the time things are getting so successful that I need to split apart one site it is probably worth the effort.

For me a big advantage of MSM is the single upgrade for releases and add-ons instead for each separate site. I think I will give MSM a try and see how things work out.

    Thanks,
    Tammo

Membership and groups are installation-wide, but you can change permissions per site, per group.

Does that help answer all of your questions?

Yes, thanks for your help. Just purchased MSM. Any chance you can point me to the MSM installation guide for EE 1.6.9? It seems that the documentation is written for EE 2x

    Tammo

Excellent!  If anything else comes up, please do not hesitate to start a new thread.
