I do websites for small business and at the moment I need to transfer domain ownership from the current designer and make sure the clients email continues to work.

    * The client uses Microsoft Outlook
    * (It appears) his mail is currently hosted on the current designer’s web server
    * I’ve never used Outlook before (and don’t want to ruin my client email or appear like a complete newb)

My plan is to setup a google apps account for the client, direct the domain dns to it, and then connect the client’s outlook with google apps.

What I’m wondering is, what is going to happen to his old mail? can he save it to Outlook locally on his PC? Should I ask him to do that?

What do you think I should do to make sure everything goes smoothly?

    Thank you very much everyone.

It’s easy to import old email. When setting up your google apps they have some sort of setup wizard to get the transfer go smoothly. You are not the first who attempts this and it’s really good documented. Don’t worry to much and just do it!

Import from where? can I import from my clients local PC? or do I need to have access to the webserver that the mail is currently hosted on?

This might give you an idea
Google apps import email. Again you are not the first one to try this. Read the manual! Google Apps has good support. I can only wonder why you are not contacting them directly.
