When should I upgrade?

I have an EE 1.6.7 implementation running 3 sites through MSM.  The most important of these sites is going through a revamp with a lot of code changes.  It relies heavily on the Gallery Module and currently uses the Forum Module, though we are likely removing that functionality.

Given that I plan for this site to continue evolving over time, I feel that the latest code-base will give me future flexibility.  I’ve created a dev-version of the sites, so I suppose that now wouldn’t be a bad time to bite-the-bullet.  But what’s it going to take to move the galleries and php-heavy templates to the new version.  I’d imagine there will be some serious leg-work here…

By next version, do you mean EE 2.1? An upgrade to 1.6.9, which is recommended, wouldn’t be hard at all.

I do mean 2.1.  Would I also need to move to 1.6.9 first?

No, that’s all taken care of by the installer.

So will the installer do something with my current Gallery setup?

No. The Gallery is no longer part of EE 2. An importer is in the works, but for now you’d have to convert your galleries to channels yourself.
