Oddly, they can post in the forums no problem, but when they attempt to comment, they get the dreaded ” you are not authorized to…”

    Any suggestions?

It doesn’t seem to be happening with everyone.  We are receiving some comments, but I’ve tried under two random members with no luck.

What version and build of EE are you using? Any extensions? Does it happen to these users reliably and reproducibly, ie every time?

    We are using 1.69
We have comment spam, parse rating stats, tag submit, constant contact, site map pinger and clone entries

The problem happens with some users, not sure why some can comment.

We are also using MSM.  I have had to turn off registration on sister sites due to spam.  Not sure if that matters.

    Thais for y our help…

coolstuffchannel, go to Admin ›  Utilities ›  Extensions Manager and hit the green Disable Extensions button in the upper right, and see if you are now able to comment as those two members.

You can re-enable extensions once you’ve done this test.

    coolstuffchannel,

Does it happen to these users reliably and reproducibly, ie every time?

Like Ingmar says, if it happens with certain users every single time then lets focus on those users. Are all your users in the same member group? How did they all originally register?

Can the users comment on one of your MSM sites and not another or is it across the board?

We have approx. 62,000 members. All are under the same member group.  Two folks emailed me recently saying they couldn’t comment. I can, others can, and have been.  At random, I pulled 2 other members from years ago, to now.  I logged in as each, but couldn’t comment.

I haven’t tested more than that.

The general reasons a member would see that message is that they are either banned, blacklisted, or failing the ip/user agent check. Assuming they can post to the forums they likely aren’t banned or blacklisted.

So, head to Admin > System Preferences > Security, turn off Require IP Address and User Agent when receiving comments and let us know if there’s any change.

Unfortunately that did not work.  Meanwhile, some others have been able to comment.

To clarify, do you mean that some that were previously unable to comment now can?

I just starting having this exact same issue this morning. One particular member was able to comment at 12:06 p.m. and then at 12:12 p.m. began getting the message “Unable to receive your comment at this time.” Other members, in the same member group have been able to comment since. I logged in as ten different members in that group and got the error message eight times, and could only successfully submit a comment twice. I have had no issue logged in as a Super Admin, but in a third member group, none of the five members in that group could submit a comment.

Until today, none of my members have had any issue submitting comments.

Additionally, this doesn’t affect the ability to post weblog entries for those five members in that ‘third group’, nor does it affect any members ability to post in the Discussion Forums.

    I’m on EE 1.6.9 Build 20100430.

Were you posting the same comment each time?

I wasn’t posting the exact same comment each time. It was a variation of jibberjabbish of different length…

What I have found though, is that this issue appears to only be affect certain weblog entries. Those members that I couldn’t post a comment in one entry, I can post in some other entries, but not in all other entries. I, as a SuperAdmin can post in all entries with no issues.

None of the entries have any settings that are different.

Rusty, what you see may be caused by the duplicate comments prevention setting.

It looks like whether a comment is a duplicate or not is judged from the collection of all comments on the site - not member- or entry-specific comments. So it’s an easy rule to break if your members speak similarly.

To turn this anti-spam measure off, you should be able to use the setting in Admin:Security and Privacy:Security and Sessions Preferences:Deny Duplicate Data = No.  If you still see the problem then, something unusual is afoot.

coolstuffchannel, this seems to be different from your problem, unless this is actually the message your users are getting.

    Regards,
    Clive

I’ll give that a shot. Thanks Clive.
