Hi - my client is only allowed to send 500 emails per hour with their hosting. Is there a way to throttle this in EE to prevent exceeding the limit?

I am afraid not. You can only limit the number of mails in each batch, but not an hourly limit or something like that. Please consider making this a Feature Request.

I know this was posted last year… and I’m still on 1.6.9… but is there any progress on this. We are running into the same issue. Thanks.

Hi, jeramiah. Nothing has changed in this regard. You can certainly have EE send in batches, have you tried doing that?

Sue, thanks so much… this has been some frustration for me. The first time we sent out email I didn’t realize you could send it in batches… so we got a bad letter from our hosting provider. Then I went on and set it to send in batches… about 250 per hour. (there’s 4500 emails) So what happened was that EE ignored the batch mode and still sent out 4500 at one time. I’m now looking into other options to send email as our hosting provider is not very happy.
I was thinking about this add-on: http://www.campaignmonitor.com/downloads/expressionengine-plugin/

There is no time setting. So in batch mode it will send batch after batch until completed. So still send the 4500 under the hour just in batches. This is probably where your issue was.

The add-on is explicitly for adding emails from forms in your EE install into your CampaignMonitor lists. You will need a CampaignMonitor account first. That is where you will be doing your sending
Here is another one which uses PostMark for sending the emails

Darn it… looks like it’s for 2.x only. I will bookmark this because this is exactly what we need. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction today John. I think as a stopgap until we upgrade to EE2… we might just use http://mailchimp.com.
Thanks buddy!
