I’m an absolute greenhorn website designer and just got everything running with the most basic EE site - the one that loads automatically when you FTP all the files to your server…

Now I need to learn how to build a professional site where I can posts pictures and articles I write. I want a cool banner and a place to put links and other posts from contributors…

Do I need to build these things in a program such as Dreamweaver or Illustrator, or can I design my pages with EE?

I know this is a very basic question - I’m starting from square one.

Typically you design the HTML/CSS outside of EE using any environment you want.  It works best to design every unique layout the site will need.  Then you bring that code into EE and replace the static/representational content with dynamic content from EE channels/weblogs.

I’ve two complete series of tutorials that walk through this process- one for a small business site and one for a Church site.

In both cases the designs were generic and adapted to work with EE.
