Is it possible to get a copy of EE 2 at no cost only for development purposes?

With ExpressionEngine 1.x it was possible to get a substanial part of the software at no cost, with limitations on its use.  That doesn’t appear to be possible anymore with EE 2.  I was just wondering if there’s a way to get a copy at no cost only for installation on a development server, for the purpose of developing add-ons for example, not for powering a public site.

I know there’s a 30 day trial, but something time limited, without source code would not serve the purpose I’m talking about.  Now that I think about it, I also don’t think that would serve the purpose of allowing me to evaluate whether I want to upgrade an existing 1.x installation and the changes that would require to the many customizations I’ve made.

    Hi, Jesse -

With a license, you are welcome to not only install the live site; but make a non-public/non-live installation for development purposes.

If you have further license questions please email sales and I’ll be happy to work with you on your specific questions.

    Thank you.

Thanks for your reply Lisa.  I can email you if you prefer, but perhaps other people would be interested in this.

I will explain my question better.

With ExpressionEngine 1.x it was possible to get a copy of a substantial part of the software (EE Core) at no cost (without purchasing a license).  There were restrictions on how EE Core could be used, but it was not time-limited, included source code, and could be used to evaluate the software and perform some add-on development.

With EE 2 it appears there is no longer any license available at no cost, only a time-limited demo without source code (which I have found to be essential to debugging ExpressionEngine and understanding what it is actually doing and why—in other words, using it).

So my question is, is there a way to get a copy of EE 2 at no cost (without having purchased any license) for installation on a development server (not for powering a public website)?

I’m interested in evaluating it for myself, and I also need to advise a client on whether to purchase a license and upgrade to it.

No, there is no way to get a copy of EE 2 at no cost.  If you’d like to email, I can work with you on some solutions to evaluate as per your particular needs.

    Thanks!

Same here - I would prefer to play around with EE 2 core before I commit anything to clients on the $250 package.

There will be no “Core” version of EE 2, I am afraid. You’re welcome to test with the Trial version, though.
