Fighting Registration Spam

I am new to EE, but one of the things I’ve felt was missing was a menu option or button to automatically move a user to the ban list. I have a members only family website. You are not supposed to get in unless I approve you. I still get registrations on an almost daily basis. It’s easy to go to activate pending - delete users en masse, but actually adding their screen name, or IP address or email address seems to be a matter of copy/paste for me. I usually do this 5 or 6 at a time, so I either need to open two windows or paste into a text editor.

Am I missing something here? Deleting the user is all well and fine, but that doesn’t stop the spammer from coming back, or help the blacklist get “smarter” does it?

Really just curious about how this works.

Spam is a major dread of mine. I don’t relish the idea of spending hours sifting through hundreds or thousands of garbage comments or even registrations. Been there, done that. My sites get more successful each month, but with popularity come the spammers. Glad to read so many hints on what to do about it.

Does anyone know what happened to the Data Pruning feature in EE 2? That was pretty much the only way of dealing with spam registrations and now it appears to have been removed!
