are templates and themes the same thing?

as in a theme is a set of templates already put together?

I see how that can be confusing, but they are different. Themes are more for the control panel, members area and forums. I think, I haven’t worked with the forum module for a while.

Templates are for laying out the front end of your site. Typically you will be just building in the templates.

    that makes sense.

So if I get this right - if Idon’t plan on changing control area or member areas - I’m safe to ignore Themes completely.

    Themes are for:

    Discussion Forum
    Members
    Wiki
    Control Panel

In 2.0, site themes can also be used to give you an infrastructure at installation including snippets, global variables, template groups and templates, channels, categories, custom fields, etc etc.

Wow, it sounds like themes have become a very useful tool for rapid development and/or site deployment.  I’m very excited about the possibilities!

So where do I find out more about creating site themes?

It’s not quite documented; your best option right now would be to download ExpressionEngine 2.0 and look at themes/site_themes/agile_records.  default_content.php is what does the heavy lifting.

    Okay, good to know.  Thanks!

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a utility that will “dump” an existing site into a theme as I suspect you have such a tool internally.

If no such thing exists or is planned then I’d really appreciate knowing as I would then look into the feasibility of building one myself.

    Thanks again!
