Tilo, which build/version of EE 1.6.x are you using? You can see that at the bottom of any control panel page.
Have you seen: http://expressionengine.com/wiki/HowTo_Turn_on_Error_Reporting/
Can you turn on error reporting and see if anything shows up?

Try turning off gzip
Admin › System Preferences › Output and Debugging Preferences

My Build is 20090723 (1.6.8)
In my php_Info display_errors is off so I guess I cant run the error reporting?
Turning gzip off didn’t fix it.

What host are you using?
You are not on the latest build. Perhaps updating to that will eliminate anything there.

Not necessarily. As the article explains you can try the overrides regardless if it is set to Off or On

I just switched over to Rackspace Cloud Sites.
Updated to the latest build and everything is sorted now. Thanks, John and Sue!
