This post gets its origin here: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/151714/

I’m using Structure to build a site. I’d love to be able to assign custom fields to a page without tying it to a weblog so as to keep my publish dropdown concise, and truly publish-oriented. It would also save me some development time.

    For example:

My company’s bios all appear on one page of the site. It’d be great to set up a ‘bios’ page in Structure and assign custom fields (name, title, bio, etc) to that page. That’s currently not possible; I have to assign those fields to a bios weblog, which then shows up under the publish tab. However, the user isn’t publishing bios. They’re updating an existing page.

I love to see the publish tab be truly publish-item oriented—that is, blog posts, user documentation, how-to’s, etc.

I know I can hide the weblog from the dropdown with plugins, but it’s still available on the publish page.

I suppose this is more of a feature request post. I’m sure there’s a good reason custom fields are tied to weblogs, I just wonder if they could be unlocked to roam free.
